Arson/bomb squad investigators are trying to determine who left an incendiary device at a Southeast Seattle bank early Friday morning.
The device, which one witness described as two bottles wrapped in tape in a box with wires, failed to ignite. Seattle police are calling the incident an attempted arson.
Seattle police spokesman Mark Jamieson said that someone who apparently saw the device inside the secure ATM area at a Chase Bank, 7100 Martin Luther King Jr. Way South, flagged down a patrol officer at 6:37 a.m. to report seeing the device. Police arson/bomb squad investigators collected the device and “rendered it safe,” according to a police news release.
A witness told KOMO Radio the device was two bottles wrapped in tape in a box with wires.
Police spokeswoman Renee Witt says they have no leads and there have been no similar arsons recently.
Sound Transit’s light-rail service to Othello Station was disrupted during the investigation. However, service from downtown Seattle to the airport, including Othello Station, has resumed, according to Bruce Gray with Sound Transit.
Anyone with information about the device is asked to call the Seattle police Arson and Bomb Investigation office at 206-I-AM-A-RAT.
