Last Friday [9 March] in Bloomington, 15 of us held a microphone demo to honor Marie Mason on the fourth anniversary of her arrest. This was also the first demo organized in People’s Park since Occupy Bloomington was evicted in early January.
A microphone demo is a temporary occupation of a very public place. Banners are hung, surfaces chalked or otherwise modified, and a P.A. set up so that music can be played and texts and communiqués read. Leaflets are handed out in a context that’s been rendered specifically combative and anarchist.
It’s vital that comrades in prison are remembered and not just within the limited circles of anarchists who organize prisoner support or who practice revolutionary solidarity. Microphone demos are one strategy to build visibility for prisoners without conceding our anarchist commitments against democracy and dialogue with the media. Particularly when organized in smaller cities or with consistency in specific neighborhoods of larger cities, they can provide an ongoing context for a wider project of solidarity with imprisoned comrades.
