Bank of America customers who wanted to withdraw money Monday morning from a downtown Seattle branch were greeted by an ATM coated with lime-green spray paint.
The vandalism at the branch at the corner of Second Avenue and Cherry Street also included a spray-painted sign of anarchy and the words “May Day” splayed across the glass of the bank’s door.
The words are likely a reference to May 1, a symbolic day of protest. This year the Occupy Wall Street movement is calling on the “99 percent” to go on a general strike that day.
Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) nationally has been a target of anger toward banks. The bank has had a security guard posted in front of the Second Avenue branch for several months.
Local Bank of America spokeswoman Britney Sheehan said the bank does not discuss its security measures but has taken steps to ensure the safety of its customers and employees.
The BofA branch was one of several nearby businesses targeted by vandals over the weekend.
